What is TikTok Advertising?
So one of the coolest things about having a team of virtual assistants is that I can learn a lot about a lot without having to become an expert on everything.
One of the most important business lessons I ever learned, came right on the heels of my first business failure. My first business was an epic failure, mostly because I tried to do everything needed to run it.
My 2nd business was much more successful because the first thing I did was hire a couple of virtual assistants to free me up to what I do best… generate leads, meet with clients and create content for them.
Ever since then I have made it a habit of delegating things as much as possible. And one of the best things to delegate is learning.
Read that again. One of the best things to delegate is learning.
Here is an example… for my business I need to know how TikTok adversting works. When my clients ask me if our VAs can help with that, I can answer it with authority. However the key here is I didnt know anything about TikTok Advertising before reading what is below in this post.
Read that one again… how can I sound like an expert, and have the benefit of expertise, without having learned it myself… by delegating the learning.
Most of us know TikTok has seen exponential growth in 2020, with active users and new members coming from all over the globe.
The attention-grabbing content from all niches has captivated all sorts of demographics, from Gen Z to Baby Boomers. It is a platform full of potential for brands and businesses, especially with the use of TikTok advertising. But how does that work?

I had one of my VAs research and prepare this FAQ.
What is TikTok Advertising?
TikTok advertising is the use of the social media platform to promote a product, brand, or service.
Types of TikTok Ads
● In-feed ads. In-feed ads are self-service ads that you can make and launch yourself using the TikTok Ad Manager section.
● Image ads. Image ads include images, brand names, app names, and ad text. This only runs in the News Feed apps of TikTok, which includes BuzzVideo, Babe, and TopBuzz.
● Video ads. Video ads are available both on TikTok and on news feed apps. These videos may run for 5 to 60 seconds. The videos may include display images, video clips, brand names, and ad texts.
● Spark ads. Spark Ads allow users to boost their accounts and gain organic interactions with other users. Spark Ads have a 142% higher engagement rate compared to In-Feed ads.
● Pangle ads. Pangle ads are ads uploaded to the TikTok Audience Network.
● Carousel ads. Carousel ads are only available on TikTok News Feed apps. These allow you to upload up to 10 images with unique captions in carousel form.
Types of TikTok Ads For Managed Brands
● TopView ads. TopView ads appear the first thing when users launch their TikTok apps. This type of ad takes over the full screen for 5 to 60 seconds until the user scrolls.
● Branded Hashtag Challenge. The branded hashtag challenge spans for 3 to 6 days. This campaign encourages organic engagement in which all content created will appear on the hashtag challenge page. It boosts brand awareness by encouraging users to post about the brand on their own profiles.
● Branded Effects. Brands can have personalized stickers or effects to encourage users to interact with them.
How much do TikTok ads cost?
There is no fixed price for TikTok ads since the platform uses a bidding model. The budget can be controlled based on ad groups and campaigns. The minimum budgets are as follows:
Campaign
Daily: $50
Lifetime: $50
Ad group
Daily: $20
Lifetime: Calculated by multiplying the daily rate by the number of days scheduled
How Do I Set Up TikTok Advertising?
Identify your objectives
Log into the TikTok Ads Manager interface and input your objectives. There are three main categories to be filled out:
- Awareness
Awareness pertains to Reach, which refers to the target number of people you want your ad to reach
- Consideration
This includes traffic, app installs, views, and lead generation.
- Conversions
Conversions help you drive actions to your site and to gain subscriptions, visits, and sales.
Name your campaign and establish a budget
Next, name your campaign so that it becomes easily recognizable to your team. This should be no more than 512 characters. Set your budget limit in the Daily or Lifetime section of the ad manager interface. You may also get avail Cost Per Click objectives.
Identify your ad placements
Choose the different placements for each ad group.
● TikTok Placement: Get In-feed ads that will appear on the ForYou feeds of your target users.
● News Feed Placement: Get your TikTok ads integrated in other apps such as TopBuzz, Babe, NewsRepublic, and BuzzVideo.
● Pangle: This makes your ad visible to the TikTok audience network.
● Automatic: The TikTok platform automatically decides the best and most optimized placement for you.
Target Your Audience
As with most social ads, TikTok allows you to customize your ads’ visibility so that they are only shown to your target market. You may adjust this based on gender, age, language, location, behaviors, interests, device details, and more.
Create your ads
TikTok allows you to have up to 999 ad groups, and each ad group can have up to 20 ads. First, choose the format: Spark ad, video, or image. Next, create your content with video creation tools or with the template provided. Then, choose one of the thumbnails or upload your own image. Add your text and the link to your site or the product page. Review the output, make your edits, and then click Submit when you are satisfied.
You may further boost the visibility of your ad with TikTok Promote. This allows users over the age of 18 to promote existing content on their profiles. Simply go to your TikTok profile, open settings, and open Creator tools. Click Promote and select the video you want to boost. Identify your goal, adjust your audience demographics, and input the budget and duration. Enter your payment information and click Start Promotion.
